2001 World Championships The largest World Amateur Martial Arts Championships ever, were held in Austria last year in the beautiful city of Vienna the date was August 21-26,2001. The championships took place in the huge Velladrome indoor Arena. Disciplines included Kickboxing and Thai Boxing. To date, over 83 countries have registered with a total of 2500 competitors. The championships were open to all qualified competitors. These championships were the largest ever held and was attended by representatives from the I.O.C. PRESS RELEASE Sunday, August 26, 2001 Vienna, Austria After several days of the best Amateur Muay Thai (kickboxing) in the world, TEAM USA captured: 4 GOLD (1st place), 3 SILVER (2nd place), 3 Bronze (3rd place) in the 2001 WKA World Championships in Vienna, Austria. All the USA Team fought hard and were well respected in their respective weight classes and divisions. The finals featured Gold medal matches with several USA competitors. One of the Muay Thai matches (91+ kg), pitted WKA USA Super Heavy Weight Champion, Lloyd Hill, against a very popular German finalist. Clearly, Lloyd's toughest opponent to date. Both competitors downed each other in the early rounds, but Lloyd repeated, hard, low-line kicks to set up his overwhelming punches to drive home the victory for the US. Another exciting Muay Thai match (-81 kg) featured US (no holds barred) fighter, Nakapan Phungephorn's, 1st round KO of the Italian Champion to take home another Gold medal for the US. Bertina Lee won a decisive decision in the women's (-55 kg) Leg kick division, after she had already TKO'd her last opponent. The other Gold medal bout, Muay Thai (-60 kg), actually matched USA's Amy Pavlock vs. USA's Janice Johnson. Early on, both women were not comfortable fighting fellow teammates. But as the match progressed, it became a battle between Janice's outside game vs. Amy's inside knee game. Both women did a great job, with Janice edging out Amy in the end. The USA also finished with 3 Silver medals: Alexandra Stokman - Low Kick Division (-60 kg) , James Moffett - Low Kick Division (-67 kg ), Amy Pavlock - Mauy Thai Division (-60 kg); 3 Bronze medals: Steve Bridwell - Muay Thai Division (-71 kg) ), Gloria Uhm - Low Kick Division (-55 kg), Robert Rogan - Low Kick (-63 kg). After all was done the USA National Team took 15 competitors to the Worlds and left with Ten (10) MEDALS...way to go U S A !!! The US Team had many sponsors and supporters that helped make this trip and the terrific outcome possible. Their contributions of time, money, equipment, and moral support are greatly appreciated.
