North American
Amateur Combat Sports Championships will
showcase the best amateurs in North America
On February 18 - 20, 2011, the Combat Sports
League sanctioned by the World Kickboxing
Association - USA will host an elimination
tournament to determine the best fighters in
North America. The event is US, Canadian and
Mexican competitors and throughout the world,
but it will also be used to select members for
the WKA US National Team that will qualify to
represent the U.S. at the WKA World
Championships.
The World Kickboxing
Association is one of the world’s oldest and
most recognized governing bodies for various
forms of Kickboxing. In 2000, the organization
formed the WKA USA to oversee Kickboxing
competition in the United States and, in 2004,
WKA USA added Mixed Martial Arts and
Submission Grappling to the portfolio of
combat sports that it regulates.
The tournament will include divisions in
BJJ and No Gi Submission Grappling, Juniors’ K-1 Rules, MMA,
& Full Contact (Kicks above the waist), and adult MMA,
Kickboxing (Low Kick), Full Contact (Kicks above the waist),
and Muay Thai (no elbows or knees to the head) as in years
past. New this year, we will offer a new division of
Full Rules Muay Thai which allows elbows with
elbow pads. We were so pleased with the
unprecedented number of competitors in 2010
that this year, in order to facilitate the
smooth running of the tournament, we will
feature a cage and 3 rings, a new registration
and check-in process and two days of action as
the semi-finals and finals carry over to
Sunday!
The 2011 event will offer the
following amateur divisions:
Ring Sports divisions for adults: Open and Novice Muay Thai,
Kickboxing (Low Kick), Full Contact (Kicks above the waist),
and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), as well as Open Division Full
Rules Muay Thai. Winners of the Open division will be awarded
the WKA NORTH AMERICAN TITLE and qualify for
the US Team to travel to the 18th annual WKA
Amateur World Championships. The Open
divisions are open to all amateur competitors
with more than three wins. Competitors in the
Novice Divisions shall have no more than three
wins in any combative sport (Thai boxing, Full
Contact, Kickboxing, MMA, and Boxing).
However, a Novice (three wins or fewer) may
choose to move to the Open class, but he/she
will not be allowed to compete as a Novice
again.
Ring Sports divisions for juniors (ages
13-17): K-1 Rules (Original WKA Rules), Full Contact (Kicks
above the waist), and MMA. Winners will
qualify for the US Team to travel to the 18th
annual WKA Amateur World Championships.
BJJ/Submission Grappling divisions: all
levels of men, masters, women, teens, and
children—managed by WKA North American
Grappling Championships. *For the first time,
BJJ/Submission Grappling will be featured at
the WKA Amateur World Championships! The top
three grapplers in each division will qualify
for the WKA USA Grappling Team and will be
eligible to travel to the 2011 WKA World
Championships.
One weekend of the best
amateur matches in North America The
three-day WKA/CSL affair will kick off Friday
(February 18th) with fighter registration,
weigh-ins and medicals. These will be open
from 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the venue.
Grappling competitors may also weigh-in on
Saturday, February 19, 2011 between 8:00 and
10:00 am.
On Saturday, February 19th, at
the Hampton Roads Convention Center (which
conveniently to the event hotel, Embassy
Suites) all Ring Sports will fight down to the
semi finals (final four competitors) and the
BJJ/No Gi Grappling tournament will fight to
the finish. On Sunday, February 20th, all Ring
Sports will complete the semi finals and
finals for each division.
Amateur fighters
interested in competing in the North American
Amateur Combat Sports Championships may
pre-register for competition by completing the
tournament registration forms found on WKA
USA's official website,
www.wkausa.com. The
fight equipment used at 2011 North American
Combat Sports Championships will be provided
by WKA USA.
Mixed Martial Arts Division
The Amateur MMA single elimination tournament
will be contested under the WKA rules for MMA
Division - Class "C". These rules can be seen
at
http://www.wkausa.com/amateur-rules-and-regulations.html
and are modeled after the Unified Rules of
Conduct. Competitors will wear slightly
oversized gloves and there will be no elbows,
forearms, or knees to the head standing or
grounded. Juniors’ (ages 13 to 17) will be
matched according to age and weight. Adult
competitors can register for either the Open
or Novice division, depending on the
competitive experience of each athlete. Both
Novice as well as Open tournament fighters
will be separated into nine different weight
classes for men and six different weight
classes for women. Novice and Open class MMA
matches will consist of three rounds of three
minutes each and will progress by way of
single elimination. The victor of each weight
class in the Open division will be crowned the
North American Combat Sports Champion in that
class and US fighters will gain valuable
points toward selection for the US National
Team.

Special Guests:
Roberto Traven: We are
pleased to announce that Roberto “The Spider”
Traven, who earned his black belt under Romero
Cavalcanti in a mere four years of training
and now holds a 6th degree. Traven is a UFC
veteran who fought in the early days of UFC
against such greats as Frank Mir and Dave
Berry. Naturally, he has also shown his
greatness in the world of BJJ; his
accomplishments include, but are certainly not
limited to, being a two-time World Champion,
and a four-time Brazilian Champion, and an Abu
Dhabi Open Class Champion. Traven will be
giving a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar Friday,
February 18th from 6:00-8:00 PM.
Rob Kaman: For our Muay Thai
enthusiasts and for MMA competitors looking to
improve their stand-up, we are pleased to
bring in the man who is to Thai Boxing what
Muhammad Ali is to boxing. Rob “The Dutchman”
Kaman has won 97 of his 112 fights—77 by way
of knockout! One of the great innovators of
the Dutch style of Muay Thai, Kaman now spends
much time training UFC champions and
sharpening their standup to perfection—among
them BJ Penn, Mayhem Miller, Renato Sobral,
Brandon Vera, Hermes Franca, and Heath
Herring. Kaman will be offering a Muay Thai
seminar Friday, February 18th 6:00-8:00 PM.
The cost of either seminar with these
world-class instructors is only $45.00, so
